Game setup

Install in the right order and save yourself a lot of avoidable trouble

Create your account first, install the game through the official installer, and only use runtime packages if Windows or the game asks for missing files. Everything below follows the recommended order.

Setup sequence

Download in this order

The installer is now the main setup path. The optional packages below are only support tools for specific Windows dependency errors.

01 Required

Create your account

Start here so your dashboard access and game account are ready before the installer touches your machine.

  • Create your dashboard access with a valid email address.
  • Inside the dashboard, link or create your game account before installing.
  • Once both accounts are ready, continue with the installer in step 2.

Required before the first login if you do not have an account yet.

02 Required

Download the installer

This is the main setup package for first-time installation and clean reinstalls. After setup, start the game through the launcher or the desktop shortcut created by the installer.

  • Use a clean folder outside protected system directories when possible.
  • Run it as administrator if Windows blocks installation or patching.
  • If the install stalls, check antivirus quarantine and folder permissions first.

03 Optional

Optional Windows support packages

Most players will never need this step, but these packages help when Windows is missing older runtime or dependency files.

  • Use Visual C++ when the client reports missing MSVCP or VCRUNTIME files.
  • Use DirectX Runtime for legacy D3DX or XINPUT dependency errors.
  • These packages are support tools only and do not replace the installer.

Optional support packages for Windows dependency issues.

Attention:

Windows may block the game executable after installation or repair

In some cases the launcher can show "Could not start the game: The request was canceled due to the configured policy". This usually means Windows SmartScreen, antivirus protection or a local security policy blocked system\l2.exe. Try running the launcher as administrator, unblock the game executable in Windows file properties, allow the L2 Essence folder in your security software, or temporarily disable SmartScreen before starting the game again.

What kind of PC is enough to play comfortably

The game is lightweight by modern standards, but using the recommended setup helps with client stability, loading times and smoother large-scale activity.

The four things that prevent most installation issues

Most support cases are not mysterious client bugs. They usually come from folder permissions, missing runtimes, antivirus interference or patching the wrong directory.

Use a clean folder

Install in a dedicated game folder and avoid mixing old client files from unrelated builds.

Whitelist the folder

Antivirus and Windows Defender are common reasons for missing launcher or system files after installation.

Run the launcher with permission

If patching fails after installation, start the installed launcher as administrator before assuming the server files are broken.

Only install optional packages when needed

Visual C++ and DirectX are support tools for missing dependencies, not part of the normal install order.

Common issues

FAQ: when something goes wrong, start here

These are the most frequent startup and patching problems. In most cases, the fix is short and practical.

Launcher Error: "Could not start the game: The request was canceled due to the configured policy"

This can happen when Windows SmartScreen or local security policy blocks system\l2.exe after download, extraction or repair.

Close the launcher, open PowerShell as administrator, adjust the path if you installed the game in another folder, then run:

Unblock-File -Path "C:\L2Essence\system\l2.exe"

After that, open the official launcher again and press File Repair. If your antivirus quarantined any file, restore it and whitelist the L2 Essence folder before trying again.

If the command does not solve it, temporarily turn off Windows SmartScreen before starting the game, open the game through the official launcher, then turn SmartScreen back on after confirming it works.

Windows says MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll or a similar runtime file is missing

Install the Visual C++ package from step 3, then try the launcher or game again. These errors usually mean the required Microsoft runtime is not present in Windows yet.

The game asks for D3DX9_43.dll, XINPUT1_3.dll or another DirectX-related file

Install the DirectX runtime from the official Microsoft link in step 3. This usually fixes older legacy DirectX dependencies used by classic games.

The launcher opens but does not patch, freezes or closes early

Run the installed launcher as administrator and check whether antivirus moved any files to quarantine. A protected folder can also prevent the patcher from writing updates correctly.

The client opens and closes immediately, or only shows a black screen

Start by repairing the game through the launcher, then verify runtimes if Windows showed any missing-library message. If the issue started after a failed patch, a clean reinstall of the game folder is usually faster than guessing.

I cannot connect after installation even though the client opens

Make sure you patched with the current launcher, confirm the server is online, and double-check that your firewall is not blocking the game or launcher. If the server is live and the patch is current, then it becomes a real support case.
